Mother Mary Magdalen Oranu, IHM is Laid to Rest

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ has laid to rest the body of their Second Foundation Member, Mother Mary Magdalen Oranu at the Sisters’ cemetery at Nkpor, Anambra State. Mother Mary Magdalen who died at the age of 102, was the second Sister with whom Archbishop Charles Heerey of Blessed Memory, founded the Congregation.

Preaching at the Vigil Mass of her funeral, His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze described Mother Mary Magdalen as a woman of great faith who lived her whole life imparting the faith to others, especially the young. Although she had to suffer much for her vocation because her people did not want her to become a Sister, she remained steadfast and with her companion, Mother Mary Bernadette Anyogu, became the pillars on which the Congregation was founded in 1937. She was ever joyful and always gave thanks to God for his goodness. His Eminence enjoined all to emulate her virtues.

At the Funeral Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, and Most Rev. Gregory Ochiagha, Bishop Emeritus of Orlu Diocese, Rev. Fr. Augustine Oburota who preached the sermon talked of Mother Mary Magdalen as one who had instructed many in virtue during her lifetime. She was like a bright shining star who spent her life teaching the faith. She lived a simple charismatic life, and radiated joy till the end of her life.

Mother Mary Magdalen would be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her death marks the end of an era of earthly presence of the foundation members for the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ. It also marks the continuation of the fruit of their steadfastness clearly manifest in the numerous vocations, with members spread throughout the World witnessing to the compassion and humility of Jesus and Mary.
