The feastday of Rev. Mother Mary Claude Oguh, Superior General of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ was celebrated on February 23, 2013 at the Novitiate Compound . The celebration began with the Holy Mass which Started at 11.00am.

In his sermon, the Chaplain of the Complex, Rev. Fr.  Samuel Nwadike emphasized the great gift of love which God has lavished on mankind. According to him, God has invested so much in humanity and therefore has a right to expect much from man. He expects His creatures to practice love to a heroic level just as Jesus did by emptying Himself completely of His Godhead and assuming the nature of the man just to reconcile man to God. He did not discriminate among his children and therefore would not expect his children to discriminate among themselves, saving their greeting for those who treat them well. Fr. Nwadike stressed that love must be universal and unconditional. He reminded the faithful that according to St. Paul’s letter to the Romans (Rm.5:8), Christ died for us while we were still sinners. He urged all to respond to God’s love beginning by obeying his commandments and doing good to fellow creatures.

In his remark, the chief celebrant, Very Rev. Fr. Martin Onukwuba congratulated Mother Mary Claude on her steadfastness and diligence. He assured her of the love and cooperation of the Sisters as evidenced in the large number of the Sisters present for the celebration and the expression of true joy radiating on their faces. Speaking on behalf of the other priests present, Fr. Martin also assured Mother Mary Claude of their own prayerful support for the success of her apostolate of leading the Congregation. Other priests present at the Mass included Very Fr. John Uzuakpundu, Rev. Fr. John Bosco Okafor and Rev. Fr. Justin Oguamma.

After the Mass, Mother Mary Claude with her Council, was conveyed in a special tricyle (Keke NAPEP) to inspect the gifts from the Sisters. Entertainments followed at the Novitiate field. There were dances and other cultural displays by the Students of the Madonna International Schools, Owerri, the Widows Association, the Novices, Postulants and the Sisters.

Earlier in the day, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, had visited the complex to inspect the work going on at the construction site of the Elderly People’s home. He donated the sum of N5,000,000 to the Superior General. Noting that the project was a very huge one, in fact more than he had envisaged, he promised greater Government involvement to ensure that the work is completed in record time. In her response, Mother Mary Claude thanked His Excellence for his kind gesture. She solicited for more support from the government and all others who could help as the project would go a long way in alleviating the problems faced by our elders.
