Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters celebrate Final Profession

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ, on Sunday celebrated the Final Profession of 12 Sisters at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, at Onitsha. Preaching the homily, His Excellency, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha and the Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province charged the Sisters to remain faithful to Christ. He noted that the celebration marked the complete generous self-donation of the Sisters to Christ and to the service of Church and humanity. With their final profession of the Evangelical Counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience, they belong completely to Christ and His Church. He challenged them to be faithful to God’s words. From now on, he said, the quest of the Sisters should be to always seek for what they could do more for the glory of God.

He warned against living a hypocritical life like the Pharisees whose lives Jesus emphatically condemned in the Bible. According to the Archbishop, the Sisters were to heed Christ’s teaching about outward observances which in many cases do not translate into the kind of life God wants. Like in the days of the Pharisees, the danger of reducing religious life to mere externalism is still very much prevalent today. People have accused Nigerians of being one of the most religious countries in the world, but also, one of the most corrupt in the world. The sheer number of churches, mosques, pastors, priests, religious men and women, does not seem to have affected the lives of the people. The people’s behaviours do not match the outward religious observances in Nigeria.

The Archbishop urged the parents, family and friends of the Sisters making their final profession to assist them in their lives as religious and in the work they do through prayers and financial assistance.
