The First Day of The Inter-School Sports

The IHM Inter-School Sports started with a con-celebrated Mass at the Novitiate Chapel, Nkpor, Anambra State on 17th March, 2014.  It was a coincidence that such a great day was scheduled on the feast of St. Patrick, the second  patron of Nigeria and formerly, a celebration day for the country.

The chapel was packed full with students from different schools owned by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters in the  country.  Superior General of the Sistrs of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, Mother Mary Claude  Oguh, Sr. Mary Agnita Maduka, the Vicar, and Sr. Mary Jerome Obiora, the Education Co-ordinator, graced the occasion.

Sister Principals and Teachers of these various schools with other members of the staff who accompanied the students were present also.   A host of other sisters were there.

At Mass, Fr. Emmanuel Nwabudo who represented the Archbishop of Onitsha, his Grace Most Rev. Valerian Okeke was the chief celebrant. Fr. Sam Nwadike, the Chaplain of IHM, Nkpor Complex welcomed all to the celebration.  During the homily, Fr Christian Ononiba from Awka Diocese, explained to the students the physical and spiritual benefits of sports.

In addition to physical benefits he mentioned - keeping fit, learning skills, developing intellect and banishing some ailments - he exhorts the students that sports enhances development of friendship among people from other nations, in their case, other states of the country.

For the spiritual benefits, he gave them the example of meeting together and celebrating the Holy Eucharist, they pray together and grow together in the church.  The spirit of sportsmanship is developed. He also likened the sports events to "wrestling between members of Church goers, meaning, no Victor, no Vanquished."

Sr. Raphael Therese Okeke, the head of the IHM Education Board in appreciation remark, thanked all the students for coming in great numbers. She also thanked the members of Education Board for their support and suggestions, congratulated the Principals and teachers and prayed that God may replenish the energy invested towards the event.

The day's events continued on the field at Cor Mariae Girls Secondary School where the Superior General, Mother Mary Claude Oguh welcomed everyone once more.   She echoed the spiritual and physical relevance of sports as expressed by the priest at Mass.  She prayed that God may be the beginning and end of all the activities of the day.

After the National and Congregational Anthem, students of Cor Mariae Girl's Secondary School Umungazi Aba, lighted the Sport Light and other activities followed. They included, Match Past, races. Football matches and others.  Ten Secondary Schools participated in the day's event.
