The Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ (IHM Sisters) holds a symposium on Archbishop Charles Heerey, CSSp, at Madonna Renewal Centre, Nkpor 7 -9 May, 2014.

Archbishop Heerey, the first Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese is the Founder of the IHM, Sisters.  The symposium is the first of its kind since his death in February, 1967.   The theme is: Christian Faith and Mission in Eastern Nigeria: The Life and Work of Archbishop Heerey.

The Chief Host, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke will launch the opening session with opening prayer on Thursday, 8 May at 9am followed by a welcome address by Mother Mary Claude Oguh, IHM, the Superior General.

Men and women of honour and reputation, people from all works are expected to grace the occasion just as ordinary people will be there.  Rev. Fr. Peter Agbonome, CSSp, will be a Special Guest of honour while Dr. Willie Obiano, Executive Governor of Anambra State will be the Chief Guest of honour.  Again, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe (The Obi of Onitsha) is going to be the Royal Father of the day.

The symposium will be a mixture of an intellectual exposure and a harness of the spirituality of this great missionary of Nigeria.   Very Rev. Fr. George Ehusani, the Keynote Speaker will dwell on ‘Christian Faith and Mission: The African Perspective’.  Other Guest Speakers include; His Excellency, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, Sr. Dr. Mary Noelle Ethel Ezeh, IHM, Senator Mike Ajaegbo and Rev. Fr. Godfrey Odigbo, CSSp.

On 8 May, the second day, Archbishop Okeke will exhaust ‘Archbishop Charles Heerey’s contribution to the growth of Christian Faith in Eastern Nigeria’ and Sr. Dr. Ezeh, IHM will speak on ‘The Early Life of Archbishop Heerey and its impact on the growth of Christian Faith in Eastern Nigeria’Senator Ajaegbo will deliver ‘Archbishop Charles Heerey’s Contribution to Education Politics in Nigeria’ on the third day, 9 May.  Rev. Fr. Odigbo, CSSp. will deliver the final paper, Theology and Spirituality of Archbishop Charles Heerey CSSp.

There will be Tea Breaks and Round-table discussions of the papers presented at intervals.  Some pupils of Sacred Heart Nursery/Primary School will make a presentation during the morning session on the second day.  After Supper the same day, there will be Gala night and social/cultural entertainment.

The symposium will end with lunch and departure at 1pm on Friday 9 May.
