The IHM Sisters celebrated the feast of St Valerian, the patronal feast of Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese, at Madonna Renewal Centre, Nkpor, Anambra State recently.

Archbishop Okeke, the special guest of honour was present to celebrate this day with the Sisters.  He officiated at the Holy Mass and concelebrated with Fr. Samuel Nwadike, the Chaplain of Nkpor Complex.

The feast day of St Valerian was celebrated earlier in the Archdiocese but both parties agreed to celebrate it on December 15.  It was a proper day together.

“How do you see your Congregation in 50yrs time?” was a searching question the Archbishop threw to the Sisters during his homily.

After the Holy Mass, the Archbishop was ushered in to the Archbishop Heerey Hall by the student dancers of Cor Mariae Secondary School, Nkpor.  He was accompanied by the Superior General, Mother Mary Claude Oguh, the members of the Central Administration and the Regional Superiors or their Vicars present.

On entering the hall, all the Sisters stood up to bid him a ’Happy Feast day’ read out together from a banner prepared for the occasion.   There were presentations of kola, welcome and feastday songs by the Cor Mariae Students, the Novices and the Sisters.

The Superior General, Mother Mary Claude Oguh, in her welcome and happy feastday address, noted that like St Valerian, a bishop, who suffered and died because he refused to give up sacred vessels, the Archbishop is “ever ready to protect something more precious, the faith and sound doctrines of the Church.”

She continued: “This is a day we look forward to.  It is our day with you … your daughters to thank you for being our father.”  She thanked him on behalf of the Congregation for the spiritual and material assistances he renders to the Sisters at different times.

IHM Sisters presented the Archbishop with different gifts.  Like father and daughters, the Sisters and the Archbishop trashed the question he posed at the Holy Mass with some other questions.  There were other entertainments in between.

The day ended with a lunch together at the Madonna Renewal Centre Refectory.  The Archbishop made a donation of a cow to the formation houses and imparted his paternal blessing at the end.  It was really a day to remember.
