The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ had time with the Ex-Governor of Anambra State, Chief Sir Peter Obi, at Madonna Renewal Centre Nkpor to thank him for his assistance during his tenure on 1st January, 2015.

In a spirit of ‘thankfulness’, the Sisters prayed for and with him in the Holy Mass of the Blessed Virgin, the Mother of God.  The Holy Mass was con-celebrated by Frs. Jerome Ezenwelum, Cosmas Madueke and Jude Ndinechi.  Chief Mrs. Magaret Obi, the wife of Ex-governor and Miss Amaka, the daughter and some of his assistants were with him for the Holy Mass.  The Superior General, Mother Mary Claude Oguh and the members of the Central Administration with Sisters from the Regions were present for the Holy Mass.

In his homily, Fr. Jude highlighted the good work done by Chief Sir Peter Obi during his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State.  He likened the honor conferred on him recently both by the Church and his town as Papal Knight and Chief respectively, to the naming of Jesus after 8days of birth.  He said: “Jesus could not be named before that time but at the right time it was done.  Likewise, the honor given to the Ex-Governor is due after his good deeds.”  He pointed out that he must have been torn between choosing to do good or evil during his time but he chose to do good.  So, as the Shepherds did God’s will at Jesus’ birth and returned giving thanks, “we are thanking God for you for the work done. “

He went on to say that more is expected of him in the future since, “the reward of good work is more work.”  Before the final blessing, the Ex-Governor and family knelt before the altar and the three officiating priests prayed for them.  After that, the Sisters stretching their hands over them, prayed for them as well.

There were group photographs with the Priests, the Superior General and the members of the Central Administration after the Holy Mass.  Everyone then proceeded to the Elderly Sisters’ Home which is one of the projects Chief Obi helped the Congregation to begin.

Though the building is uncompleted, the frontage was prepared for a time together.  After an opening prayer, the Superior General, Mother Mary Claude made an opening remark and thanked the Ex-Governor for his assistance in some of the projects he helped the Congregation to start.  These include the hostel for Lab students at Umuoji and a Bus for them, the Elderly Sisters’ Home and some others.  On behalf of the Congregation she thanked Him and prayed for God’s blessings and protection on him and his family.

There were presentation and blessing of kola, a welcome song by the novices and Chief Sir Peter Obi’s remark.  He made a request at the start and end of his speech that the sisters pray for the country, the governor and all leaders.  Sequel to the request, he shared some of his experiences as a governor.  Although some good came out of many decisions, he faced hard times and oppositions which later gave way to something tangible.  He acknowledged the support of his wife and prayers from people like the Sisters.  He promised to continue with his assistance in our projects when he could.

By the end of his speech he made a donation and gave some bags of rice.  The Superior General thanked him once more and Chief Margaret said the closing prayer, praying for the government and the nation.  Fr. Jerome gave the final blessing.  There were pleasantries and everyone went away happy.
