A DAY WITH IHM ELDERLY SISTERS

The IHM Sisters in Archbishop Charles Heerey Region celebrated Easter with the Elders of the Institute at Immaculate Heart Convent, Oguta Road, Onitsha on Easter Monday, the 6th of April, 2015.

It was a great joy, a show of respect and appreciation to these Sisters who have served the Church and the Congregation in various capacities and years in their youthful age.  A book, “Breath of the Spirit” written by Sr. Mary Rosarii Munonye, presently the number one in the Congregation, was also launched.

Archbishop Charles Heerey Region is one of the four Regions of the Institute in Nigeria and Immaculate Heart Convent, Oguta Road, Onitsha is within this Region.  Sr. Mary Anthoninus Ezeobiagwu, the Regional Superior with her Regional Councillors organised this celebration to put a smile on the faces of these our Sisters.  It was a day together.  Communities also displayed their community projects.

In her opening remark, the Regional Superior said: “We have come to celebrate Easter with you.  We have come to tell you that we care. We have come to tell you that we love you.”  She thanked God for bringing all together and appreciated the presence of all the Sisters, Novices and Postulants at the occasion.

Sisters brought gifts of all sorts for the elderly Sisters which included: different kinds of fruits and vegetables and varieties of foodstuffs.  The Superior General, Mother Mary Claude Oguh, the Vicar General Sr. Mary Agnita Maduka, and Sr. Mary Jerome Obiorah, Second Councillor attended the celebration.

The Regional Superior adorned, congratulated and presented Sr. Mary Rosarii a gift for the job well done even at the age of 92.  The Superior General also congratulated her and remarked that she has shown that neither age nor ill health can be a barrier to doing what we can do.  She assured the elders of the care and prayers of the rest of the members of the Congregation and presented them individually with gifts.

The Superior General launched Sr. Mary Rosarii’s book and was followed by the communities and Institutions of the Congregation.  The Regional Superior presented a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a prize received by the Region during Rev. Mother’s feastday.  Sr. Mary Placida Idigo, on behalf of Sr. Mary De Victoire Ichoku, the local Superior of the community, unveiled the statue.

After a lunch together and cutting of the Easter cake, sales of the Community projects followed.

It was really ‘a joy shared and a joy doubled’; proper fun and a family get together.
