About Us

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ, is a Religious Institute of Papal Status. Members of this Religious Institute are incorporated into it by a public profession of the Vows of obedience, poverty and chastity. By this Religious profession, members undertake the observance of the evangelical counsels of Chastity, evangelical Poverty (Simplicity of Life) and evangelical Obedience in imitation of Christ. The members who live as a community of Sisters carry out, in a special way, the missionary mandate and commitment of the Catholic Church where the Church most needs them, especially in the care of women and children and the underprivileged.

Our Charism and Spirit

From our continuing studies and reflections on the many facets of the life and work of our Founder, Archbishop Charles Heerey, we discover that the Gospel vision which propelled him to found our Congregation was the COMPASSION OF CHRIST.  In his Vicariate in the 1930s, he displayed an overwhelming concern for the plight of the under-privileged, especially the women and the children.  His desire and missionary activities centred on bringing the Compassion of Christ to the people in the spirit of Humility (no-better-than-thou attitude).  He also saw in the Immaculate and apostolic Heart of Mary, the compassion of Jesus his Son.

vision in our daily lives. We therefore strive to model our lives upon Mary’s Immaculate and apostolic Heart: her spotless purity, her humility, quality of her prayer (always listening to and discerning God’s will) and quality of her presence to others (availability). Mary teaches us how her Most Pure Heart reaches out to the weak and intercedes for the needy.

Our Motto:       “AD JESUM PER MARIAM” (To Jesus through Mary)

Missions:    As missionaries, the Congregation has spread to countries outside Nigeria
